1/31/10 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Sunday

Wow, I was doing some interesting searches as to possible reasons why a person may gain weight even though they are doing what they "think" are all the "right" things.  They are eating nutritiously and exercising frequently but still seem to gain weight - which is what I've been wondering about myself!  Did you know staying up too late can affect your weight loss/gain?!  Hormones take over your appetite causing you to snack late at night, eat more in the morning, and not feel feel after meals.  Stress can also increase your appetite.  Wow, lucky us, there are so many odds against us.  Anti-depressants also cause weight gain in 25% of people, especially if they are taking them long-term.  Menopause slows down your metabolism (sweet, I did this for nine months to get rid of my endometriosis pain).  Any kind of medication or condition which may affect your hormones or appetite will most likely increase your appetite.  My consultant suggests you stay away from sodium and sugar as much as possible because many of the things mentioned above are water-retention and will hopefully come off once you're off the medication.  Weight is always a struggle but stay positive and keep working hard - that's all you can do.
